Something for Everyone: Back from Break

By Leonard F Chikarason Luckily I planned my busy life around Brian’s busy life so the whole site was on vacation last week. Good thing too as I don’t think I would have been able to pick just a few (three or less) books last week. This week, I’ve got both ends of the spectrum and something smack dam in the middle: Axe Cop: President of the World trade: Perhaps you’ve heard of this comic, drawn by Ethan Nicolle based on the made up adventures of his eight year old brother Malachai? It’s wild and crazy. So much so that FOX has decided to make it the cornerstone of their upcoming late night animation block starting this month. There are tons and tons of free strips online at Axe Cop Dot Com but I’m still a primarily physical copy kinda guy, and I’ve been waiting a while for this one. Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1: Perhaps you’ve heard by now, Doctor Octopus is the Spider-Man of the Marvel Universe these days. Well, some of Spider-Man’s villains have noticed a change in Spidey’s behavior and decided to pool their efforts. Spider-Man has the best Rogue’s Gallery (yes, even better than Batman’s) and to see folks like the Beetle, the Shocker and the Boomerang headline a book definitely deserves a look. Satellite Sam #1: Matt Fraction, writer of Hawkeye from Marvel Comics, maybe my favorite book of 2013, hits the ground running with the creator owned, adults only crime mystery book. The elevator pitch for this is what if the equivalent of Mister Rodgers or Captain Kangaroo were found dead in a New York City flop house with lots of incriminating evidence around him. It’s up to his son to clear his name and the cops are no help! Be here next week while I wax poetic on the long awaited (by me at least!) return of one of the funniest super hero comics of all time! Something For Everyone: The Collector & Lots of Links!

Jun 19, 13 Something For Everyone: The Collector & Lots of Links!

Posted by in Something for Everyone

By Leonard F Chikarason This week, I’ll be focusing on some great collections coming out this. Also, a little bit for our digital friends, who perhaps I’ve been neglecting of late: Saga vol.2 – the second collection of perhaps the greatest new comic story of the last several years. Written by Brian K Vaughn (he’s currently show running Stephen King’s Under the Dome) with beautiful art from Fiona Staples. The original pitch for this was “Game of Thrones meets Star Wars.” Having only cursory knowledge of Game of Thrones, I understand there is lots of sexual content in there as well. Still, give Saga a whirl! Edison Rex vol. 1 : this was released digitally through Monkeybrain Comics and is now being collected by IDW. The simple idea of this is what does the world’s greatest super villain do when his arch enemy goes away? Probably a better Superman story than the one playing in your local megaplex. Marvel #1 & #2 digital sale: Looking to get started in the digital world on some of the hottest stories of 2013? Hey, did you know Doctor Octopus is now Spider-Man? How about Wolverine running a school for mutants? And that Daredevil and Hawkeye are two of the best superhero comics being made PERIOD? Now you can pick up the first two issues of these books and many more for just 99 cents each! Join me next week as I break my back ( and wallet) bringing you info about the World’s Finest team up, a new psychological thriller from one of the best crime writers in comics and some new non-Green Lantern lantern books. Something For Everyone: Superman Returns Again?

Jun 12, 13 Something For Everyone: Superman Returns Again?

Posted by in Comic Books, Something for Everyone

By Leonard F Chikarason After a seven year absence, Superman returns to the silver screen this weekend in Man of Steel. A bit darker, Christopher Nolan (of the most recent Batman franchise) is the executive producer. After the rousing success that Marvel has had with their films, DC Comics is hoping Superman can revitalize their movie hopes after the failure of 2011’s Green Lantern. DC is going all out, with tons of promotion not just for the movie, but the comics as well! Superman Unchained: DC’s hottest writer, Scott Snyder of Batman fame teams with Jim Lee, whose art was used to redesign the entire New 52, to helm a brand new Superman title. Now, since the aforementioned New 52, the Superman family titles have been plagued by many, many creative changes. This book, with DC’s number one writer and the co-publisher on art, seems untouchable. American Vampire: the Long Road to Hell: Speaking of Scott Snyder, the book that brought him to the proverbial dance (the early issues of American Vampire had backup features written by Stephen King) has been hiatus. This month sees a self-contained story set in the 50’s as a young greaser, Travis Kidd, battles against the very vampires that stole his family and his best girl. The Walking Dead #111: The argument can be made that things have been slow in the last few issues of the Walking Dead. If you just came on board with issue #100, we long-time fan call this the calm before the horrible, bloody storm. Just look at that cover! See you next week and thanks for reading! Something For Everyone: Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

By Leonard F Chikarason This week is a great week to welcome back a returning classic, the re-christening of a great all-ages book and a collection of arguably the most popular comic series in the world. Astro City #1: After a three year hiatus, one of the best superhero comics returns. Kurt Busiek, one of the most prolific writers of the 2000’s returns to his signature series. Sure, many of the characters may remind you of similar “big two” superheroes, but it’s the human element that is the real hook here. And dig those beautiful Alex Ross covers! Herobear & the Kid: One of the most celebrated all-ages titles comes from self-publishing side to KaBOOM Studios. Mike Kunkel tells the story of a young boy and his stuffed bear and their wild adventures. The Walking Dead vol. 18 What Comes After: Collecting issues #103 through #108 of the Robert Kirkman/Charles Adlard series that inspired the hit AMC TV show. Are you behind & sick of your friends making references to a tiger? Now’s the time to get caught up! Next week, a new Superman book timed to coincide with the Man of Steel film and so much more! Something for Everyone: All Number Ones

May 29, 13 Something for Everyone: All Number Ones

Posted by in Comic Books, Something for Everyone

By Leonard F Chikarason I would like to begin with an apology. Last week, I had the intention to give away copies of Subatomic Party Girls and still do. However, since I pre-ordered it (you can do that with digital comics) I broke Comixology and caused a HUGE delay in activating the gift codes. Hopefully you have your comics as of this reading!   Now, off to the races! The Wake #1: My silver bullet pick for the week. It’s by a great creative team (Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy) and needs no additional sell for me. But here goes. A 10-issue maxi series with horror and sci-fi elements under the sea. This one is from DC’s mature readers imprint, Vertigo, so not for the kids! Adventures of Superman #1: This one is for everyone! This collects the first three digital chapters of the new “out of New 52” continuity (i.e. Superman has red shorts over his tights!) stories about the Man of Steel. These are simple, straight forward stories with no need of 70 plus years of past Superman stories to give a try. X-Men #1: Written by Brian Wood (currently writing Star Wars for Dark Horse) with beautiful art by Oliver Coipel this is a first in the Marvel X-Universe, all the women of the X-Men in their own book! Marvel has really been killing it of late with books headlined by women (Captain Marvel and Fearless Defenders) and I have tons of faith in this one. Next week, the long awaited (by me, at least) of one of the richest superhero stories of the last 20 years, the beginning on a DC staple and more! Something for Everyone – Everything’s Coming Up Green!

By Leonard F Chikarason Leonard was given five Comixology codes to give away for issue #1 of Subatomic Party Girls from his friend and writer of Subatomic Party Girls, Chris Sims. Leonard was not compensated for a review and his opinions are his own. Welcome back to another edition of my pics for the best bets in comics this week. This week’s selection is something ending, something beginning (both Green) and something fun with a giveaway: Green Lantern #20: It all ends here. Back in late 2004, Geoff Johns took over the Green Lantern franchise putting Hal Jordan back in the costume for the first time in over 10 years and bringing back Sinestro as the main baddie. It was the success of this run that DC made Green Lantern a big name, along side Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman. This also spawned a movie and cartoon line, of varying quality (I’ll say! – BE). None of this would have happened without that very first issue some eight plus years ago. This is Geoff Johns last issue on Green Lantern, wrapping up the plot threads and the current storyline, Wrath of the First Lantern. Also note, this is a giant sized issue, with a retrospective of Johns’ entire run, so be prepared to pay a bit extra! The Green Team #1: Two of my favorite creators, Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani, get their first time ever in continuity book! This time, taking the name only of an obscure 70’s book, this story focuses on a group of teenage trillionaires trying to make the DC Universe a better place with money. Subatomic Party Girls #1: The hottest pop power trio try to make history by being the first band to play on the moon. They fail, and have crazy space adventures! This is a digital only book from Monkeybrain Comics and has art by Erica Henderson and is written by Chad Bowers and Chris Sims, who is a friend of mine. Since digital comics can be scary, here’s some...
