Recognizing Depression in Men for What It Really Is

dadbloggerslogoLast week, the Dad Blogging community I belong to learned that one of their own had succumb to depression and ended his own life. I didn’t personally know Marc Block of Divided Dad but myself and others in the community wanted to pay respect to Marc, and bring attention to male depression, by writing posts about the topic this week.

There was a time in my life where for about six months I was in a bad place. This is a very personal story for me and one that, until now, only a few people knew. Some might say I’m making a big deal out of nothing but it’s a time I can point to in my life where I felt truly alone, scared and hopeless.

Something For Everyone – This week, mostly the kids!

for kids

Welcome the latest installment of hot picks for comics this week. It may not be themed every week, but we’ve got a loose theme going here. This week, we look at three much maligned, to varying degrees, properties in the world of geekdom!

Wolverine & the X-Men #29: Maybe you read comics in the 90’s. Or watched the cartoons and even you feel the X-Men, especially Wolverine are both “played out.” Au contraire! A split in ideology between Cyclops & Wolvie have divided the X-Men in two, each with their own School to teach future mutants the way of the world. Wolverine the head of a school? How’s that going to work? Well, issue 29, out this week, is a great jumping on point as the current students of the Jean Great Academy for Higher Learning put a time capsule together and we get to find out!

Kickstarter My Heart – The Big One

By Leonard F Chikarason

Last week, I spoke at great length about my very first Kickstarter experience and how poorly it went. I’m not usually that (publicly) negative, but reviewing my history with that project really brought back some bad feelings.

This time, it’s all about positivity.

Two of my favorite creators in all of comic-dom are Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani, best known for their DC Comics books, Tiny Titans and Superman Family Adventures, Vol. 1. They have a very accessible writing and art style that appeals to kids of any age and always sneak in a little something extra for the grown-ups.

Consider This Experience Cultivated

Sometime last week my wife dropped some hints about going to The Melting Pot for Mother’s Day. Such hints as, “Hey, The Melting Pot is taking reservations for Mother’s Day” and “Hey, did you get my message that The Melting Pot is taking reservations for Mother’s Day?”  I’m always leery of Mother’s Day outings. I hate paying triple price on ridiculous buffets at banquet halls; it’s such a scam.  At least with The Melting Pot, I know that their prices are that expensive all the time(!)
